Rates are set on all rateable properties (rating unit) by Local and Regional Councils.
Rates are based on what a property is used for, such as residential or commercial use and the capital value of the property. Our registered valuation service provider, Quotable Value Limited, provides the values and factors as part of the basis for rates setting.
Rating Valuations are performed every three years by Quotable Value Limited. These take effect in the following rating year. For example, the 2014 revaluation takes effect from 1 July 2015. The next revaluation will be in September 2017.

Rating Information Database
The Rating Information Database (RID) records all the information about properties necessary for the setting and assessment of rates.
The Funding Impact Statement in the Exceptions Annual Plan (EAP) 2014/15, once adopted, will be applied to the information in the RID to determine rates for 2014/15 year.
Pursuant to Section 28 of the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002 (the Act), the RID for the Ruapehu District is currently available for inspection. The RID may be inspected, during normal opening hours, at Council Offices in:
- Huia Street, Taumarunui
- Ayr Street, Ohakune; and
- Seddon Street, Raetihi
Extracts from the RID will be posted, faxed or emailed (pdf format) to ratepayers upon request.
Pursuant to Section 29 of the Act, ratepayers may object to the completeness and correctness of the information in the RID. An objection form is available below and ratepayers need to submit any objections to the RID with Council by Friday 20 June 2015.
Objections received by this date that result in a correction to the RID may affect the 2015/16 rates set. Objections received after this date that result in a correction may not be applied until the following rating year (2016/17).
If an owner wishes their name, or postal address, or both to be withheld from the RID, a written application, pursuant to Section 28C(2)(a) of the Act, must be made to Council.
