Visitors

  • The number of visitors to Ruapehu is steadily increasing, with just over 1.5 million visits in 2009/10.
  • The highest number of skiers for one day was at Turoa in September 2006, with 7,675. Whakapapa's highest was 6,634 in September 2007.

  • Over 1/3 of all the District is owned by people living outside the area (38.7%).

  • The four areas which have the highest amount of people who own property living outside the District are:
    • Rangatau (60.9%), near Turoa Skifield.
    • National Park (47.1%), near Whakapapa Skifield.
    • Ohakune (41.4%).

Industry

  • The largest industry is still agriculture, which employs 21.7% of the working population, with Defence second at 10%.
