Young people are being urged to have their say on the Draft Spatial Plan for Taumarunui and Manunui which sets out proposals for the growth and development of the townships.
Taumarunui High School prefect and student leader Daisy Tumataroa said that the township's Rangatahi were its future and it was important for them to have their say on what this looks like.
“People my age often don’t understand the importance of plans like these as they think it doesn’t affect them but this just isn’t true,” she said.
The Draft Spatial Plan is proposing a plan of action that will impact on the future of all young people who live here covering key areas such as housing, employment, transport, recreation and heritage.
We need many more affordable housing options for people at all life stages, more industrial land if we want to increase employment opportunities, have better transport options, and protect the things and areas that are important to us.
The final Plan will help influence planning and investment decisions at a local and regional level which can have deep seated implications for our community and way of life.
It is important that young people have their say on the Plan in its draft stage as once adopted it will impact on things for many years and generations to come,” she said.
Daisy noted that making a submission was easy and could be as little or as detailed as people want.
“People can comment on any aspect of the draft Plan they like, or submit other ideas on how they think the townships should grow and develop.
Copies of the Consultation Document that provides a summary of the proposed ideas is available at Council’s Huia St office or on the websiteruapehudc.govt.nz where there is also an online feedback form.
You can also simply email; [email protected]or comment via Council’s Facebook page.
The important thing is that as many people as possible, both young and old, have their say,” she said.
