Mayor Weston Kirton said he has raised the question of whether the ambulance donated in 2018 by the Stubbs family to Hato Hone St John in Taumarunui can be acquired by a local trust for the benefit of the community when the vehicle is retired from operational use.
"Following the news that the Stubbs family ambulance had been transferred to another district I was inundated with calls from concerned residents who couldn't understand why it was no longer serving Taumarunui," he said.
"While people accept the explanation that ambulances need to be rotated to get the best mileage and lifespan out of them, and that the late Jeremy Stubbs endorsed this, some felt they had lost something important to them and I am committed to finding a resolution that can engender good will and satisfy the community."
Mayor Kirton said that St John has indicated they would be willing to talk about the options in this regard.
“While it is early days, with no formal discussions having yet taken place, St John has signalled its commitment to reaching a decision that ensures the respect/mana of the Stubbs family is upheld in the community. I will continue to talk with St John on an agreement and will update you when I have further details.”
