Local Government elections are held every three years and this year’s election will take place on Saturday 9 October.

You must be over 18 years old, be a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident and enrolled on the parliamentary electoral roll to stand for election.

Voting

Voting in the Ruapehu District Council election will be by post. Voting papers will be sent out from
17 September 2010 and should preferably be returned in the provided freepost envelope by Thursday
7 October.

Do you think people should be able to vote?

Right now hundreds of thousands of people won't be able to vote in the upcoming local elections.

They may have turned 18, moved house and not told us or not enrolled yet. None of these people will be sent their local elections voting papers in the mail.
