Ruapehu District Council Further Notice of Election and Poll
Nominations have closed for the 2025 triennial local authority elections. Listed below are details of the confirmed candidates for Ruapehu District Council.
Where elections are required, they will be conducted by postal voting using the Single Transferable Vote electoral system. Voting will open on Tuesday 9 September 2025 and will close at 12 noon on Saturday 11 October 2025.

Māori Ward Poll - Ruapehu District Council
A poll will be held in conjunction with the above elections to confirm whether Ruapehu District Council electors wish to keep or remove the Māori Ward as part of Ruapehu District Council’s representation structure. The outcome of the poll is binding and will determine whether a Māori Ward will be retained for the Ruapehu District Council elections in 2028 and 2031. The First Past the Post (FPP) Electoral System will be used for this poll.
Enrolment and Special Voting Arrangements
Ruapehu District Council residential electors who are not listed on the final electoral roll for these elections can enrol up to 5pm on Friday 10 October 2025 by calling 0800 36 76 56, visiting the Electoral Commission website www.vote.nz, by texting your name and address to 3676 to get a form sent to you or by email request to [email protected].
Ruapehu District Council ratepayers who are not listed on the final electoral roll for these elections can obtain an enrolment form from the Ruapehu District Council Office, 59-63 Huia Street, Taumarunui and enrol up to 4pm on Friday 10 October 2025. Online applications for ratepayer elector registration can also be made at www.electionz.com/ratepayer.
Special voting documents will be available during normal office hours from Tuesday 9 September to Friday 10 October and between 9am and 12 noon, Saturday 11 October 2025 from the Ruapehu District Council Offices at, 59-63 Huia Street, Taumarunui or Ayr Street, Ohakune.

NOTICE OF 2025 TRIENNIAL LOCAL AUTHORITY ELECTIONS AND POLL
The following elections and poll will be held by postal vote on Saturday 11 October 2025.
Ruapehu District Council
(Single Transferable Voting electoral system)
Election of the mayor
Election of three councillors for the Ruapehu Māori Ward
Election of six councillors for the Ruapehu General Ward
Election of five members of the Ōwhango-National Park Community Board
Election of five members of the Taumarunui–Ōhura Community Board
Election of five members of the Waimarino-Waiouru Community Board
Candidate names will be listed in alphabetical order on the voting papers.
In addition to the above elections a Poll will be held to confirm whether Ruapehu District Council electors wish to keep or remove the Māori ward as part of Ruapehu District Council’s representation structure. The outcome of the poll is binding and will determine whether a Māori Ward will be retained for the Ruapehu District Council elections in 2028 and 2031.
Nominations
Nominations for the listed positions open on Friday 4 July 2025 and must be made on the appropriate nomination form for each position. Nomination forms and a candidate information handbook can be found either on the Ruapehu District Council website, or by request to the electoral officer via the contact options listed below. Completed nomination documents must be received by the electoral officer no later than 12 noon on Friday 1 August 2025. Each nomination must be accompanied by a deposit of $200 incl GST, payable by eftpos, cash or online banking (see nomination form for requirements).
Candidates are encouraged to submit a candidate profile statement and colour photograph with their nomination, for sending out with voting documents to electors. The requirements for profile statements and photos are set out in the candidate handbook which is available with the nomination forms. All nomination documents must be lodged at the same time.
Electoral Rolls
Preliminary electoral rolls for these elections can be inspected at the following locations during office hours from Friday 4 July 2025 to Friday 1 August 2025.
- Ruapehu District Council Office/Library, 59-63 Huia Street, Taumarunui.
- Ohakune Service Centre/Library, Ayr Street, Ohakune.
- Raetihi Service Centre/Library, Seddon St, Raetihi.
Electors may enrol or amend their enrolment details on the residential electoral roll by contacting the Electoral Commission:
• Online at www.vote.nz
• By texting your name and address to 3676, calling 0800 36 76 56, or by emailing [email protected] to ask for a form to be sent to you.
Updates to the preliminary electoral roll close at 5pm on Friday 1 August 2025.
You can still enrol after this time; however, you will need to cast a special vote. Locations and hours for community voting sessions will be published closer to the voting period.
If you are of Māori descent, you may change between the Māori and General electoral roll for this election up until Thursday 10 July 2025.
Applications for registration as a ratepayer elector are to be made on the non-resident ratepayer elector enrolment form available wherever copies of the electoral rolls are displayed and must be returned to the Ruapehu District Council electoral officer before 5pm Friday 1 August 2025. LOCAL AUTHORITY ELECTIONS ON 11 OCTOBER
Local authority elections will be held on Saturday, 11 October this year. This notice tells you how to enrol, and who can enrol as a ratepayer elector, so you can vote in the elections.
The Electoral Roll closes on Friday 1 August 2025. If you enrol after this date, you will need to cast a ‘special vote’ at the election.
You can vote by post. Make sure you are on the Electoral Roll to receive your postal voting document.
You can only enrol once
You can only enrol, or be nominated to enrol, once in a council district, no matter how many properties you own in that council district.
What ‘Council District’ means in this Notice
‘Council district’ includes:
- city, district and regional council areas
- a community board area, if established
- the area of Auckland Council and the local boards.
Residential Electors
If you are registered to vote in Parliamentary elections (a Parliamentary elector), you are automatically enrolled as a residential elector to vote in local authority elections. The address where you are registered as a Parliamentary elector must be in the council district for the local authority elections.
Ratepayer Electors
You may be eligible to enrol as a non-resident ratepayer elector in a council district if both of these apply:
- you are on the district valuation roll and pay rates in the council district
- the address where you are registered as a Parliamentary elector is outside that council district.
Your eligibility to enrol or be nominated as a ratepayer may also depend on your individual circumstances as determined by criteria in the Local Electoral Act 2001 and its regulations.
An organisation can nominate one of its members or officers to vote on its behalf
Any organisation, firm, company, trust, corporation or society or association that pays rates on one or more properties in a council district may nominate one of its members or officers to be the ratepayer elector.
The person nominated must consent to the nomination and not be enrolled or nominated as a ratepayer elector for any other property. The person nominating and the nominated person must be registered as Parliamentary electors at addresses outside the council district where the property is located.
If more than one person pays rates on the same property
If partners, joint tenants and tenants in common collectively pay rates on a property in a council district, one of the group may be nominated to go on the Electoral Roll. The person nominating and the nominated person must be registered as Parliamentary electors at addresses outside the council district where the property is located.
Existing Ratepayer Electors should have received an enrolment confirmation form
New Electoral Rolls are compiled every three years for the local authority elections.
You should already have an enrolment confirmation form or other advice on your ratepayer elector status if:
- you were enrolled as a ratepayer elector for the 2022 local authority elections, or since then
- you enrolled or were nominated as a ratepayer elector.

- get this form early so you can get answers to any questions you have about the form or being on the Electoral Roll before the roll closes on Friday 1 August 2025.
