Ruapehu Mayor Weston Kirton has welcomed the Government’s $50,000 contribution to Council’s Mayoral Relief Fund to support those impacted by flooding in Ōhura.
Mayor Kirton thanked Emergency Management Minister Mark Mitchell for the funding saying it would make a meaningful difference to the community as it continues its recovery.
“We are really grateful for the Government’s contribution. This funding will make a huge difference in helping our Ōhura community get back on its feet,” Mayor Kirton said.
Mayor Kirton also acknowledged Minister Mitchell for visiting Ōhura the morning after the flood to see the impacts firsthand and speak directly with residents.
“That visit meant a lot to the community. It showed a genuine understanding of the scale of what people are dealing with and the support they need,” he said.
“The Mayoral Relief Fund allows us to respond quickly to urgent needs and support families as they clean up, repair, and rebuild. This contribution strengthens our ability to do that.”
Mayor Kirton said recovery would take time and encouraged anyone in need of support who has not yet come forward to do so, and those who are able to consider contributing to the Fund.
