Ratepayers urged to check their rate rebate eligibility before 30 June

Ruapehu Mayor Weston Kirton is urging ratepayers who have not yet applied for a rate rebate for the current 2025/26 rating year to contact Council and check their eligibility before the 30 June deadline.

“The income eligibility for a rebate is $31,510, or $45,000 with a SuperGold Card.

However, as each application is judged against criteria set by the Government although a ratepayer's income might exceed the income threshold, a rates rebate could still be available depending on the rates amount and number of dependents,” he said.

“Council wants to ensure that everyone who qualifies for a rate rebate receives it and

some people may not realise they need to apply every year, even if they have previously received a rebate.

With five weeks remaining until the 30 June deadline, Council has received 562 applications worth $436,000. That is 53 fewer than the 615 applications received at the same point last rating year.

Each year, Council hopes to do better than the year before and return even more money to Ruapehu households.

With the maximum rates rebate worth $805, the Rates Rebate Scheme provides important financial support for many lower income people and is well worth applying for,” said Mayor Kirton.

“Council encourages any ratepayers who think they may qualify to get in touch and check their eligibility.
