Community Invited to Help Shape Ōhura’s Recovery and Future Resilience

Council is inviting Ōhura residents to attend a community recovery and resilience hui and BBQ lunch at the Ōhura Hall next Monday 15 June from 11.00am to 2.30pm.

The hui will provide an opportunity to hear updates on recovery efforts following the recent flooding, discuss future flood warning arrangements, and help shape the development of an Ōhura Resilience Plan.

Ruapehu Mayor Weston Kirton said that while significant progress had been made since the flood, recovery would continue for some time, and it was important that the community helped shape the next steps.

“The flooding had a major impact on Ōhura and the surrounding area.

While our focus remains on supporting recovery, we also need to look ahead and consider how we can strengthen the community’s preparedness and resilience for future events,” Mayor Kirton said.

"The people who live, work, and farm in the area have invaluable local knowledge and experience that is key to helping the community better prepare for future events.

I encourage as many people as possible to come along and have their say. This is an opportunity to help guide both the ongoing recovery effort and the development of a resilience plan that reflects local needs and priorities.”

The hui will begin with community and agency updates from 11.00am to 12.00pm, followed by a community BBQ lunch until 12.45pm.

After lunch the hui will cover flood warning arrangements, including trigger points and communication systems, before moving into a discussion on the development of the Ōhura Resilience Plan and how the community can be better prepared for future emergencies.

All members of the community are welcome to attend.
