Ruapehu Resource Recovery Centre and Sustainability Manager Emily Jasmine is hosting four free Winter Pruning and Grafting Workshops in Ohura, Taumarunui, Owhango and Raetihi during July and August.
The popular annual workshops are part of Council’s commitment to helping build resilient communities as many households continue to face rising living costs.
“Growing and preserving your own kai is a great way to help feed the whānau and save money,” Emily said.
Suitable for everyone from complete beginners to experienced gardeners, the workshops are free, fun and open to all ages. No bookings are required. Participants simply need to bring their own secateurs, loppers or hand saw, along with any pruning and grafting questions they may have.
The workshops will cover pruning techniques for both fruit and ornamental trees, helping keep them healthy, productive and looking their best. Participants will also learn how to graft new fruit varieties onto existing trees, a technique that can significantly increase fruit production.
“By the end of the workshop, people will have the practical skills and confidence to prune their own trees, helping extend their life, improve their health and maximise future harvests,” Emily said.
“Winter is the perfect time to prepare your trees for spring growth. Learning effective pruning and grafting techniques now can help deliver a bumper summer harvest and healthy, productive trees for years to come.”
Emily said many people return year after year to refresh their skills and enjoy connecting with other local growers.
“There's always a great sense of community at these workshops, with people sharing knowledge, experiences and gardening tips.”
Anyone wanting to keep their fruit trees in top condition and maximise their summer harvest is encouraged to attend.
