Minor damage reported following 5.9 earthquake

Ruapehu Civil Defence Controller Clive Manley says the district has escaped with only minor damage following the magnitude 5.9 earthquake near Taumarunui early on Saturday morning.

"We've experienced a number of minor slips, along with damage to some residential and commercial properties, including broken windows and damaged chimneys.

"Given the strength of the earthquake, we've come through relatively lightly," said Mr Manley.

People with insurance should photograph or video any damage before contacting their insurer to start the claims process.

If you rent your home, contact your landlord as well as your contents insurance provider.

People who are uninsured and unable to afford essential repairs should contact Work and Income, which may be able to assist depending on their circumstances.

Mr Manley said the freezing temperatures now affecting the area, with overnight lows falling below zero, made it especially important for anyone using a fire to first check their chimney or flue to ensure that it is safe to use.

"Before lighting a fire, please inspect your chimney or flue for any damage caused by the earthquake. If you have any doubts about its condition, have it checked before using it."
