What have we done?
Council, with our support partners, have been able to arrange insulation for 100 homes since 2016. All of these families received a discount and many received free insulation.
What are we doing now?
Council is not currently exploring any options to financially assist in the insulation of local homes. Council does however, suggest that all residents interested in insulating their homes contact an insulation company to undertake a free quote of their home and assess whether or not they will be eligible for a Central Government subsidy/grant via the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA). NOTE: Only insulation companies registered with EECA can offer and provide Central Government subsidy/grants.
What you need to know
As of 1 July 2018, the Warmer Kiwi Homes Programme begins. This is a four year programme which will assist in the funding of ceiling and underfloor insulation of kiwi homes whose residents meet specific criteria.
Are you eligible?
To be eligible for a grant you will need to:
- be the homeowner (owner-occupier) and have a Community Services Card or SuperGold combo card, OR
- own and be living in a home in an area identified as lower-income (details to follow) OR
- be referred by the Healthy Homes Initiative
- and own a home built before 2008.
Grants for landlords of low-income tenants are available until the end of June 2018 when Warm Up New Zealand: Healthy Homes comes to its scheduled end.
Legal requirements for landlords:
Insulation will be compulsory in all rental homes from 1 July 2019. Insulation Statements are now compulsory with all new tenancy agreements.
