The journey so far...

On 14 September 2016 Council held a public meeting in Ohura to discuss a range of issues relevant to the township's future including; the Regional Accelerate25 Action Plan, government’s initial co-investment announcements, planned and future projects, township revitalization, Council services, the 2018/28 Long Term Plan process and how this all fits together.

There was an excellent level of community engagement at the meeting where participants considered the issues confronting Ohura and what needed to happen to get them moving. This included discussions on the good things and not so good things as well as perceptions around township identity.

Full meeting ‘brainstorm’ notes can be found in the Document Links panel below.

The success of using urban design specialists Bespoke Landscape Architects for developing township revitalisation concept plans for Taumarunui saw Council engage their services for other Ruapehu towns including Ohura.

The Bespoke concept plans for Ohura were presented to group of community representatives in Ohura on Monday 5 December 2016.

A copy of the Bespoke Concept Plans can be downloaded from the Document Links panel below.

Council sought feedback from the wider community on the concept plans and their thoughts for township revitalization.

The first proposed project is the redevelopment of the town hall to provide all access public toilets and enhance the café area. It is envisaged this may provide a potential business opportunity for servicing visitors to the town.

New public toilet and hall up-grade.

Council submitted to government for grant funding to support tourism growth and was successful in gaining $140,000 in seed funding toward new public toilets.

In November 2017 Council presented the planned work programme to the Ohura community for the new toilets and upgrades to the public hall (see presentation below)

It is intended that this work will be completed by early 2018.

The medium term vision is have facilities that encourage freedom campers to overnight in Ohura. This includes plans to install showers.
