Ruapehu District Stormwater Systems
Ruapehu District Council provides a stormwater system that is designed to protect the citizens of Ruapehu and their properties from flooding.
A system of stormwater pipes collect stormwater runoff from roads and from private properties (run-off from driveways and roofs of buildings) discharging to the road channel, and funnels the stormwater to the nearest watercourse.
Ruapehu stormwater assets are spread over Taumarunui, Ohakune, Raetihi, National Park, Rangataua, Owhango, Ohura and Waiouru.
There are several small townshipsin the district, such as Horopito, Kakahi and Raurimu, that are currently unserviced with a public stormwater and flooding system. There may be pressure in future to provide this service, with growth in neighbouring townships.
To better explain the statistical nature of storm frequency, the percentage of a particular storm event being exceeded in any one year, probability is now expressed as the Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP).
