Council staff and councillors, along with members of the Taumarunui-Ōhura Community Board (TOCB), joined the Taumarunui Youth and Community Trust (TYCT) and ākonga from Turaki Primary School and Te Kura o Ngapuke this afternoon to celebrate the official opening of the new obstacle course in the Taumarunui Domain.
The project was submitted to Council’s Empowering Communities – Enhancing Lives Fund by TYCT Manager Amy Perez and selected for development by the TOCB.
Tamariki from Turaki Primary School played a key role in the design of the obstacle course, helping to select the types of challenges they wanted to see included. They couldn’t wait to test it out—enthusiastically joined by ākonga from Te Kura o Ngapuke. Together, they put the course through its paces, testing their strength, balance, and coordination, and were quick to give it their seal of approval.
Speaking at the opening, Councillor Channey Iwikau and TOCB Chair Luke Pepper both emphasised that community assets like this represent an investment in young people and the future.
TYCT Manager Amy Perez said the project is a great example of what can be achieved when Council and community organisations work in partnership and she’s hopeful it will be the first of many more to come for TYCT.
