Rates are set on all rateable properties (rating unit) by Local and Regional Councils.
Rates are based on property use such as rural, residential, commercial, industrial and the capital value of the property. Council's registered valuation service provider Quotable Value Limited provides values and factors as part of the basis for rates setting.
Rating Valuations are performed every three years by Quotable Value New Zealand Limited. The updated values are effective for rating the year following revaluation, for example, the 2020 revaluation takes effect 1 July 2021 for the 2021/22 rating year. The next revaluation will be September 2023.
