The Christmas lights will brighten up Hakiaha Street in Taumarunui again this festive season thanks to a strong show of community spirit and generosity from local volunteers, businesses, and organisations.
The much-loved Christmas lights display has been made possible through the efforts of Dick Schevyens, supported by local companies, Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs workers, council staff, and community volunteers.
Mr Schevyens said he stepped in after hearing that resourcing challenges might mean the lights would not go up this year.
“These lights are something the community really looks forward to. When it seemed they might not happen, I called on a group of willing people who stepped up to make sure they did,” he said.
The lights were last installed two years ago and proved hugely popular with both locals and visitors, becoming a highlight of the festive season in Taumarunui.
Installing the display was no small task. Many of the lights required repairs before they could be hung, and specialist skills and equipment were needed to complete the work safely.
“I called on my electrician son Glenn, who owns Ezi Electrical, and with help from Glenn Mulgrew of Central Sparkies, Jessie Davies of King Country Labour Ltd, The Lines Company, Jilisens Contractors Ltd, Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs workers, council staff, and volunteers, we were able to repair and install the lights,” Mr Schevyens said.
He said the project was a clear example of Taumarunui’s strong community spirit.
“Taumarunui has amazing people and companies who are always willing to donate their time, skills, and resources to projects like this.
I want to give a huge thank you to everyone who turned up and helped get the job done.”
With the lights now in place, Mr Schevyens said he was looking forward to seeing families and visitors enjoying the display over the Christmas period.
“It’s great to see the town lit up again. I hope the lights bring a bit of joy and bring people together this Christmas,” he said.
