Residents packed the Ōhura Community Hall at a community meeting today to discuss the flood response and next steps, highlighting their strong engagement in recovery efforts.
Ruapehu Mayor Weston Kirton thanked residents for attending despite being in the middle of a massive clean-up effort with their homes and township being severely impacted by the flood.
“The meeting provided an important opportunity to update residents on the response so far, outline the plan ahead and hear directly from the community about their needs and concerns.
Although people are suffering it was a positive discussion with residents expressing appreciation for the efforts of first responders and Council staff over recent days.
The purpose of the meeting was to focus on welfare and understanding the needs of the community, and it was encouraging to see people come together in such a constructive way,” Mayor Kirton said.
Mayor Kirton also acknowledged the leadership shown locally, including Taumarunui-Ohura Community Board deputy chairperson Sophie Stockbridge, who has played a key role in supporting the local response, along with Council staff, elected members, civil defence, supporting agencies and contractors.
Heartland Services attended the meeting to help connect residents with available government and community support, arranging appointments for those needing assistance.
Council staff outlined a range of recovery actions, including plans to pump out septic tanks to enable residents to remain in their homes, extended opening hours at the local Transfer Station, and assistance with refuse collection and removal of damaged vehicles. Work is also underway to establish a Mayoral Relief Fund.
The discussion with residents covered a wide range of issues, including the need for improved warning systems, support for rubbish collection, treating septic-contaminated ground with lime, clearing roadside drains and culverts, requests for firewood and dehumidifiers, local road conditions, and access to financial support.
Council and partner agencies will continue to work closely with the community to address these needs as recovery efforts progress.
