Representation Review 2028

Have your say on how Ruapehu is represented

Every six years, Council must review how the people of Ruapehu are represented. Our next review is under way, ready for the local elections on 14 October 2028.

What the review looks at

  • How many councillors Ruapehu has
  • How councillors are elected: across the whole district, by local wards, or a mix of both
  • How the Māori ward is set up
  • Whether we have community boards, and if so how many, their areas, names and membership

Whether Ruapehu has a Māori ward is not part of this review. That was settled by the binding poll at the 2025 elections.

Why your views matter

The review starts with you. Before any options are drawn up, we want to understand your community: where you go for everyday needs, where you feel you belong, and how well the current arrangements work for you.

Tell us about your community

Our survey is open from 18 November 2026 to 14 April 2027. It takes about 10 minutes, and there are no options to choose from yet. We just want to hear about your community.

Paper copies are available at any Council service centre in Taumarunui, Ohakune or Raetihi. You can return them there, or post them to Ruapehu District Council, Private Bag 1001, Taumarunui 3946.

What happens next?

From 8 February 2027 we will hold community mapping sessions, where you can help us map how your community connects. From 15 March to 14 April 2027 we will share draft options with you through community board sessions and drop-in sessions, alongside the Long-Term Plan. Council will then decide on a proposal, and formal consultation will run from 7 July to 1 September 2027.
